Currently, the majority of users in Pakistan were unable to access Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp due to the widespread protests in country. Mobile services have been suspended across the major cities including Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi while internet services have been suspended in other cities.
According to sources, the government and mobile phone providers are losing Rs. 1 billion every day as a result of the internet outage. People who depend on online apps and payments, such Careem, InDrive, Food Panda, etc., have also seen a large loss of income. Pakistan is now the world’s third-largest contributor to online labor and majority of people are working remotely through the internet. Due to the internet outage, freelancer who rely on internet are unable to access their work, contact their clients, and submit their assignments on time, which has had a negative influence on their revenue and reputation in the marketplace.
Chairman of Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA), Mr. Muhammad Zohaib Khan has also criticized the sudden and unconsented blockage of internet services in the country amid the ongoing political situation. He said that internet plays a vital role for IT industry and incapability to work without it. If the internet disruption continues, the people have to deal with the consequences of this. Hoping to resolve this issue as soon as possible as this will make our work difficult and also impacts Pakistan’s economy. Let’s hope for the positive response from the government.
